High above Winnipesaukee
It’s calm blue surface
Mirroring the sky
We hiked a hill
So many years ago,
And when my young legs
Couldn’t match your stride
You set me
On a stone
And scouted up ahead.
Perched beneath that clear
Blue sky
Surrounded by
Lush green fields
Gilded with goldenrod
I imagined a moose
Or bear might make
Its way near.
Just when it seemed
Too much time
Elapsed you reappeared,
Gently reassuring me
That we only needed
A few more feet
To finally reach
The summit.
