(mostly) short poems on life and love

a koan (just between friends)

September 4, 2016 by Michael Guerin

maybe the zen masters of old
had it nailed down
(just so),
how even the singular act
of drinking tea
(when executed
with ritual
precision) can inch
one nearer
to the naked heart
of pure non-attachment.

but who can say
for sure?

at least they did
their level best
to drag contemplation
down from the dusty rafters
of stone-cold
cathedrals
filled with the stench of death.
so on that particular note
(and just between
friends) i’ll leave
you with this simple
koan —

“as i sit to take a shit…
enlightenment.”
