county road 83

May 26, 2019 by Michael Guerin

a narrow ribbon of pavement
cuts across rolling green fields

overgrown with thistle and weeds.
no cars clutter the landscape.

sunlight streams in acute angles
carried on august breezes.

two turkey vultures climb in lazy
circles high above the street.

in the distance a derelict barn
askew and abandoned decays,

faded planking consumed by rot
beyond any need to replace.

proudly displayed at the peak
stands a rusted weather-vane

neglected for decades and stuck
forever facing the east.
