the loneliest tree

July 7, 2019 by Michael Guerin

alone in a sea
of sand it stood for centuries
braving all elements.

beneath its branches
camel bones were scattered
in the scant shade.

as a living lighthouse
passing caravans used it to mark
their route

until a drunk driver
crashed his truck into its trunk
snapping it in two.

(for the ténéré tree)
