Wandered Off

January 29, 2022 by Michael Guerin

An abandoned beach
reached by a gravel path
across a low hill
littered with boulders,
thorny shrubs and sheep.

Far from any passing glance
she lay atop
a large flat rock
on the edge of sand,
her hand kissed by the sea.

And held apart
at so great a distance
by a fate not mine to give,
I could sense her spirit
falter — feeling lost.

Her bare body bathed
in August sunshine
as stratus clouds stood watch,
she slowly closed her eyes
and wandered off.
