(mostly) short poems on life and love

Midnight in Madeira Beach

February 13, 2022 by Michael Guerin

An evening breeze
rustles linen curtains

and stains me
with waves of jasmine.

Unable to sleep
and drenched in sweat

I plunge headfirst
into melancholy,

then light up a smoke
and replay scenes

from black-and-white days
of misspent youth,

the soft amber glow
like a broken tail-light

on a Dodge pickup
somehow leading me home.
