(mostly) short poems on life and love

from the sea

May 25, 2022 by Michael Guerin

come close my love
and forget cruel ocean
which sought to drown
our flame
beneath cold waves
hurled relentlessly
against the rocky shore.
consider how we held
our own as each
new breaker
rolled in and filled
our mouths
with brine and stole
all words, carried away
on a stinging breeze
to angry clouds
while a flock of gulls
looked on.
spit out your grief
at what went wrong
and what seemed lost
to the fickle
winds of fate,
as there will be
other times and tides
for the sweetest taste
of a lover’s kiss
which is never
out of season.

This poem was inspired by Anne Sexton’s “From the Garden”
