(mostly) short poems on life and love

hide and seek with my dreams

July 6, 2022 by Michael Guerin

a thick blanket
of purple-gray clouds
crowd the horizon
with flashes of burnt umber
peeking through the gaps.
a gibbous moon hangs
in the eastern sky
and shines on the cove
while playing
hide and seek
with my dreams.

gentle waves lap
the hulls of blue and white
sailboats anchored
for the night.
one by one condo lights
flick on while a siren
echoes in the distance.
to the west
a single-engine plane
drones low over
an empty beach.

i moved a thousand miles
from my home
just for this view
and take it all in
as a shore-ward breeze
blows through the window
and kisses my face
while a dying sun
bleeds moment
by moment
away.

Inspired by the quote, “My head reeled at the sheer and startling beauty, the wide, bare openness of it. The sense of space, the vastness of the sky above and on either side made my heart race, I would have traveled a thousand miles to see this. I had never imagined such a place.”
~ Susan Hill
