six straight days
of ninety-eight degrees
have kept me
locked indoors.
my overworked ceiling fan
whines and wobbles
but can’t cool
this scorching air.
bathed in sweat,
i haven’t prayed for rain
since all words
seem pointless.
so i lie in bed
and curse my fate, hoping
for this heat wave
to break.
