(mostly) short poems on life and love

a smile (in passing)

March 25, 2024 by Michael Guerin

with a lurch the train
shudders from the station.
moving slowly at first,
it picks up speed
causing trees to blur past
the window which greet
my faded reflection.
directly across from me

a young woman bites
her lower lip, our knees
barely touching as she
adjusts her i-phone. white
earbuds poking beneath
a woolen cap, soon
the faintest notes
from some dance mix echo

in the space between us.
head slowly bobbing while
the miles click mechanically
past, she looks up so i smile
as we sit awkwardly close
yet ages apart, aware
that our paths will never
pass so near again.
