a ribbon of pavement
cuts through rolling fields
overgrown with thistle,
grasses and weeds.
turkey vultures glide in lazy
circles high above the street.
up ahead a derelict barn
decayed and abandoned
bakes in the sun, its faded
red planking consumed
by rot and long past
any need to replace.
and bolted to the peak
a rusted weather-vane
neglected for decades
is stuck facing east.
